No Super Bowl in BGP’s Sights
Tom Szczerbowski
Dec 20, 2002

After missing Week 11’s contest due to personal reasons, Pablo Frank did his opposition a favour and came back for Week 12’s home game against their arch rival, the Stack. He got right into the thick of things with his usual bombastic flair when he sounded off with these words: “we’re gonna make them sorry they ever came into our town!” Frank’s threat proved to be emptier than the upper deck at BGP Stadium as the Stack rolled over the BGP side with ease, 4-1.

At the start of the season, BGP were not even contenders. At the end of the season, the same was true, but at least, as Frank put it, “I think we earned some respect during our 5-game losing streak.” Respect for what exactly ? That statement baffled everybody and sent reporters scrambling for answers. After a long and exhaustive investigative effort, this mystery remains unsolved.

Tom Szczerbowski and Paul McRae spearheaded the Stack’s demolition of BGP – McRae was the ususal catalyst in driving the offense of this superbly skilled team and Szczerbowski rebounded from an off-game in Week 11 to score three TDs. So stuffed with talent, the Stack’s formidable offense was unstoppable as Don Macdonald scored another TD and the insuperable Stack defense clogged passing lanes and shut down BGP handily, holding them to only one late TD by former Stacker Sean Hope. “I feel badly for my former teammate having to play for those guys and being consigned to certain doom. He deserves better”, said Szczerbowski about his pal Hope. With their hopes of making the playoffs dissipating in a hurry, the 2002 season has painted another dismaying portrait of BGP, which finishes the year 3-9.

This game was not without its embarrassing moments. For example, in the 3rd quarter, ‘Morganna the Kissing Bandit’, known to sports fans for her smooching exploits on Stack players, ran out onto the field of play and made a beeline straight for Frank, who looked more surprised than he was after BGP’s recent winning streak. An excited Frank opened his arms anticipating a warm embrace, but instead was kicked by Morganna squarely in the mid section. Mr. T was on hand to watch the game from the press box and was quoted as saying, “This time I really do mean it – I pity the fool !!!”

On this day, the Stack received good news for two reasons: 1) they won their ninth game, and 2) they promptly got to leave BGP City.
